4 honored with Pride of Phagwara award

PHAGWARA: Four prominent personalities of the area were bestowed ‘Pride of Phagwara’ award here by Punarjot – an NGO – for their outstanding contribution to society.

UK-based international coordinator of Punarjot Ashok Mehra said that a ‘Sanman Samaroh’ was held for this purpose. Mementoes and citations were awarded to them. UK-based NRI Kirpal Singh Khabra was the Chief Guest.

Dr Sarabjit Rajan of Rajan Eye hospital was awarded for becoming the first doctor in Kapurthala district to transplant cornea in Phagwara a few days ago, thus doing noble cause of giving sight to the visually impaired.

Mehra claimed that Dr Rajan will perform cornea transplant free of cost.

Others honored were Hardeep Singh Bhogal for running Home for elderly and orphans at nearby village Sahni, Sandeep Badhan for spreading awareness for eye/blood donation and Shakti Mahendru for his work for eco-friendly environment.

Commendation certificates were given to Punarjot’s young team members, including its coordinator Paramjit Basra, Balwinder Heera, Happy Mahi, Rahul Banga, Raj Kumar, Nikku, Harpreet, Gagandeep, Vijay Kler.

Mehra disclosed on this occasion that Punarjot Director Dr Ramesh of Ludhiana had recently performed five more cornea transplant surgeries free of cost, thus providing sight to the visually impaired under the NGO’s project ‘Mission Roshni’ (sight).
