BREA, CA: The Sikh American and Interfaith community of Brea and Surrounding Cities held a Candlelight Vigil in memory of people who lost their lives and to pray for the injured, including Lt. Brian Murphy, who was injured while saving numerous lives in the Oak Creek Sikh Temple (Gurudwara) in Wisconsin on August 5.
It was attended by over 300 people, elected officials and interfaith leaders.
Some of the dignitaries present and who spoke were Congressman Ed Royce; Mayor Sharon Quirk-Silva, City of Fullerton; Mayor Don Schweitzer, City of Brea; Mayor Jeremy B. Yamaguchi, City of Placentia; Mayor Pro Tem, Tom Lindsey, City of Yorba Linda; Chief of Police, Rick Hicks, City of Placenta; Acting Chief of Police, Dan Hughes, City of Fullerton; Captain John Burks, representing Chief of Police, Jack Conklin, City of Brea; Council Member Marty Simonoff , City of Brea; Council Member Ron Garcia, City of Brea; Council Member Greg Sebourn, City of Fullerton and City Administrator Troy L. Butzlaff, City of Placentia.
The hosts/organizers of the event were: Jatinder Singh and Rosie Singh (residents of Brea), Shivinder SIngh and Dr. Ginny Chawla (residents of Brea) and Dr. Arinder Chadha and Manpreet Chadha (residents of Placentia).
The event started at 7:30pm with National Anthem sung by Norma Rodriguez and with the explanation of the words “Waheguruji Ka Khalsa” and “Waheguruji Ki Fateh”, followed by a song, led by 2 kids – Amrit SIngh Chawla and Sahej Kaur Chawla.
Those speaking on behalf of the Sikh community were Amrit Singh Chawla (Age 9), Sahej Kaur Chawla (Age 12), Dr. Jassie Ahuja and Dr. Arinder Chadha.
The program ended with the Sikh prayer (Ardaas), read by Simran Chadha, followed by Jakaras “Bole Sone Haal.” The local Sikh American community thanked everyone for their support and attendance. The program was emceed by Jatinder Singh, Bhavandeep Singh and Hardip Kaur.
