PHAGWARA: Vishwa Hindu Sangh, District Kapurthala President Raman Nehra has demanded a legal framework for independent transparent and religious management of Hindu temples and religious institutions in Punjab. He appealed to the Punjab government to immediately implement the Devalia Devasthan Management Act.
The main objective of this act is to ensure independent and transparent management of temples by freeing them from government control. He said that Articles 14, 19, 21 and 25-28 of the Constitution which guarantee equality, religious freedom and self-management Nehra said that this act includes protecting Hindu temples, removing illegal encroachments in temples, providing security to minority Hindus, providing government office to the Hindu Welfare Board which is doing solid work for the Hindu community in Punjab.
He said that their main demands are as follows.
Independent Management: Establishment of democratically elected Temple Management Committees at State, District and Tehsil levels.
Transparency: Full transparency in financial and administrative affairs of temples, statutory audits and regular elections.
End of Government Interference: End of government interference in religious and administrative affairs of temples. Establishment of a Religious Advisory Board headed by renowned saints, akharas and Shankar Khargal.
