LOS ANGELES: On Saturday April 12, the Greater Los Angeles Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations will conduct a citizenship clinic for aspiring U.S. citizens.
Lawful residents who are eligible for naturalization will receive free legal assistance in completing the citizenship application, called the N-400. CAIR-LA’s Immigrants’ Rights Department will be holding the clinic in light of forthcoming changes to the application, which go into effect May 2. Some of the changes include more questions and a lengthier application, going from 10 pages to 21 pages.
“We’re trying to get eligible legal permanent residents to apply with the old form while it is still available,” said Immigrants’ Rights Attorney Farida Chehata.
Even after the new application takes effect, immigrants will still be able to continue receiving help from CAIR-LA’s Immigration Department, which aims to make citizenship more easily accessible. The Immigrants’ Rights Department is dedicated to providing high-quality, low cost and pro bono services to individuals seeking legal assistance. Led by Farida Chehata, the department will conduct legal assessment, representation, advocacy, information sessions, citizenship application assistance, clinics, and outreach. In keeping with the organization’s goal to promote inclusion and civic engagement, the department seeks to empower non-citizens by helping them gain independence, security, and the opportunity to fully participate in American society.
At the clinic, volunteer attorneys and recent law school graduates will help applicants complete the N-400 form, required by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
