Consulate General of India, SFO, celebrates International Yoga Day on June 17Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derived from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity. An estimated 300 million people practice yoga around the world, with more than 36 million practitioners in the U.S. alone. Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131 with an aim to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.

Consulate General of India, San Francisco celebrated the 9th edition on Saturday 17 June, at Memorial Park, San Ramon. Over 200 bay area residents from different walks of life participated at the event.

Ambassador Dr Nagendra Prasad, CGISF said  yoga is more than a physical activity. It cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions.

Happy to see an increase in the number of Yoga practitioners across the world after India’s initiative at UNGA to designate June 21 as International Day of Yoga  in 2014. Thanks to all Yoga schools and Yoga Gurus. Delighted to celebrate 9th IDY in San Ramon with the community, added Dr Prasad.

Instructors from Yoga Bharati guided the attendees on the asanas and explained the benefits associated with each posture. Mrs Padmavathi Nagendra Prasad guided the attendees on the meditation techniques and its importance on mental well being.  Meditation is a practice in which an individual uses a technique such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity  to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state
