Grand Sunnyvale event to mark Lohri

IMG_3898SUNNYVALE, CA: Lohri is a fun filled festivity observed by the Punjabi community every year in the month of January for a good harvest that carries cultural and traditional significance. It is observed on the eve of the winter solstice based on the belief that the Lohri night is the longest night of the year.

This time Shalimar Restaurant, Sunnyvale had arranged for a grand event to mark the harvest festival. It was attended by over 200 people all around the Bay area. Mo Polani, owner of Shalimar, Sunnyvale had arranged for this unique event on Sunday 12 January.

The festival was marked by a range of traditional exciting activities such as lighting the ritualistic bonfire during the evening, IMG_3908dancing on the beats of the dhol, traditional handmade dishes, singing popular folklore around the bonfire and enjoying sumptuous feast. Lighting of the fire has been common in Winter Solstice festivals throughout time and the world. It signifies the return of longer days.

The menu at Shalimar restaurant for Lohri celebration placed great emphasis on authenticity and included traditional dishes representing the fun, celebration and energy that are characteristic of the region. The festival experience comes full circle with the merry-making tradition of song and dance with the dhol.
