Hindus, Muslims burn effigies of Pakistan and terrorism

DSC 0979PHAGWARA, Punjab:  Phagwara saw a series of protests by both Hindus and Muslims against Pulwama terrorist attack in Kashmir. Local Gol/Paper chowk along national highway 1 remained abuzz with about half dozen protests and burning of effigies of Pakistan government and terrorism.

Perhaps in a first, about 500 Muslims burnt effigy of Pakistan government and terrorism to protest Pulwama terrorist attack.

Led by Maulana Ubais-ur-Rehman, Shahi Imam, Jamma Masjid, Gaushala road, they took out a protest march in town after offering their weekly ‘Nimaz-e-Jumma’ (special Friday prayer) in the mosque.

Sporting national flag and raising anti-Pakistan slogans, they marched through Gaushala road, Bansawala bazaar, Banga road, railway road  before converging at Gol chowk near NH 1.IMG 0151

They raised ‘Pakistan Murdabad’ (Death be to Pakistan) and ‘Hindustan Zindabad’ (long live India) slogans. They also raised slogans in favor of Indian army.

Another group of Muslims, led by Punjab Haj Committee member Sarvar Gulam Sabba, also flayed Pakistan for the Pulwama attack.

A large number of activists of Hindu outfits, including Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shri Jatadhari Seva Mandal, Bajrang Dal also burnt separate effigies of Pakistan government and terrorism near Gol chowk against Pulwama attack.

Led by Phagwara municipal corporation Mayor and BJP stalwart Arun Khosla, BJYM District General Secretary Sabi Tohri, Seva Mandal’s chief Munish Chadha and Bajrang Dal leader Shiv Saini respectively, the protesters also made bonfires of a poster of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan. The poster showed shoes around Khan’s neck.

Raising slogans against Pakistan, its PM Imran Khan and Jaish-e-Mohammad, they expressed solidarity with security forces combating continued menace of cross-border terrorism.

The protesters first assembled in Hanumangarhi temple, observed two minute silence to pay tribute to Pulwama martyrs and then started a protest march.
