DUBAI: Cracking down on Islamist groups, the UAE has put 94 people with suspected links to the Muslim Brotherhood on trial for plotting to overthrow the Gulf regime and seize power.
UAE Attorney General Salem Saeed Kubaish said 94 suspects have been referred to the Federal Supreme Court for trial.
“Investigations revealed that the arrested people launched, established and ran an organization seeking to oppose the basic principles of the UAE system of governance and to seize power,” state-run WAM news agency reported.
The agency did not name the suspects, but authorities have been arresting perceived dissidents for months. The crackdowns on Islamists has raised tensions with Egypt, which is ruled by Muslim Brotherhood member President Mohammed Mursi.
The agency yesterday quoted Kubaish as alleging that the suspects built a secret network to plan and raised money through real estate and other deals.
He also claimed that the suspects had links to the Muslim Brotherhood and others for expertise and financial support.
“The organization took a foreign cover (shape) and announced its declared principles as being calling on society to observe the teaching and virtues of Islam, while their undeclared aims were, in fact, to seek to seize power,” the agency said.
“They planned this covertly in secret meetings which they convened in their houses and farms, as well as other places, seeking to hide the fact of these meetings, as well as what happened at them, from the authorities,” it said, adding that the suspects built a secret organizational structure in which they distributed roles and tasks to achieve their real aims.
The suspects planned to use the social networking sites on the Internet, in order to turn nationals (UAE citizens) against their government and the leaders of the State as part of an ill-intentioned media plan which they drew up and carried out in service of their major goal, it reported.
“They (suspects) also communicated with the international Muslim Brotherhood organization and other similar organizations based outside the State, and asked them for help, expertise and financial support to serve their undeclared goal of seizing power,” the WAM said.
The actions taken by the organizational structure which they established have penetrated all sectors of the State and its organizations, such as societies, schools, universities, ministries and even families, it said. -PTI
