CHICAGO: South Asian Classical Music Society of Chicago (SACMS) Spring Music Festival has announced hosting a concert featuring one of India’s most illustrious classical musicians, Pandit Nayan Ghosh on sitar accompanied by the 12 year-old Ishaan Ghosh on tabla,.
The concert will be held on Sunday, May 5 at 3:00 pm at Merit School of Music Gottlieb Hall in Chicago. The event is marked as tribute to Ravi Shankar, the Sitar Maestro from India
The first half of this two part program will feature Pandit Nayan Ghosh in a stimulating sitar demonstration and performance. Lyon Leifer, the renowned western classical flautist and master of the Indian keyless bamboo flute (bansuri), will join Ghosh in an informative discussion about the contributions and the role of the great Ravi Shankar in the development of the sitar, the quintessential instrument of Indian classical music.
The second half features a rare duet performance on the tabla featuring Ghosh switching from the sitar to tabla. Besides being one of India’s greatest sitarists, Maestro Ghosh is also recognized as one of the nation’s greatest tabla players. He is the only artist in India with a superlative command of these two diverse instruments. This duet (jugalbandhi ) features tabla prodigy, Ishaan Ghosh.
Ishaan began his study of the tabla at the age of two when his parents noticed his natural and keen interest in the instrument. Ghosh traces his musical lineage back for six generations. Ishaan represents the 7th generation to carry on the authentic aural tradition of Indian classical music.
Pt. Nayan Ghosh, Director of Sangeet Mahabharati Music Academy of Mumbai, was last heard in Chicago two and a half years ago in an acclaimed recital performance in Preston Bradley Hall of the Chicago Cultural Center at the 2010 World Music Festival. He has performed at many other music festivals including the World Music Festival in Seattle, the East-West Festival in Athens, and Crete, Greece besides the Jazz Festivals in Fukuoka and Tokyo, Japan.
