CHICAGO: The first Constitution Day was celebrated at the premises of the Consulate General of India in Chicago on November 27 with great solemnity.
This was part of the decision taken by the National Committee set up under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister of India for the celebration of 125th Birth Anniversary (14 April) of Dr B.R. Ambedkar. The Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949. The Committee decided to observe 26th November as “Constitution Day” every year.
The program commenced with the observation of one minute of silence as a homage to the victims of the dastardly terrorist attacks in Mumbai, marking the 7th Anniversary of 26/11 attacks.
Addressing an august gathering of Chicago elite, Indian Consul General Dr Ausaf Sayeed recalled the mammoth work done by the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly under the Chairmanship of Dr B.R. Ambedkar. He mentioned that this day is of considerable significance to modern India and aptly the GOI decided to celebrate it annually as the ‘Constitution Day’ starting from this year, which also marks the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar.
The Consul General emphasized that the Constitution of India does not discriminate against anyone on the basis of religion, creed, sex or any other ground. It is the duty of every citizen of India, therefore, to uphold the Constitution both in its letter and spirit. The Consul General also read out the Preamble of the Constitution of India.
The two documentaries, ‘Taana Baana: The Warp & Weft of India’ and ‘India-: The Spirit of Freedom’, highlighting the salient and empowering features of the Constitution were also screened. O P Meena, Consul, proposed a vote of thanks.
