NEW YORK: Priyanka Moses, who trained for eight years under Guru Satya Pradeep, the founder of Nritya Saagaram Dance Academy, presented her Bharatanatyam Arangetram at the Hindu Temple Auditorium in Flushing, New York.
Priyanka demonstrated the trained knowledge of Bharatanatyam by presenting eight pieces from her repertoire. She started off with an invocatory piece ‘Mallari’, followed by Ganapathy Kavuthuvam’, a rhythmic song in praise of Lord Ganesha that portrayed the nritta reflecting with different rhythmic footwork. Priyanka’s abhinaya was dexterously portrayed in the next item ‘Sabdam’ song ‘Sarasijakshulu’, which depicts the different childish pranks of Lord Krishna.
The skills she learned on abhinaya and nritta were proven by Priyanka in ‘Senthil Mevum Deva Deva’ which describes the beauty of Lord Muruga. She expressed the abhinaya aspects of love, bravery, compassion, wonder, humor, fear, disgust, anger and serenity with nritta that consists of fast-paced footwork.
The next item ‘Aadal Kalaiyin Aadharame’ written and sung by Dr Babu Moses was presented gracefully by Priyanka, followed by ‘Sri Saraswathi’ and ‘Thillana’. The concluding piece was the highlight of the arangetram, delineating ‘Kurathi,’ the character of a gypsy girl from the south Indian State of Tamil Nadu.
The master of ceremony was Shanth Moses. A prominent orchestral ensemble from India accompanied Priyanka’s three-hour-long performance. Akshay Padmanaban (vocal), Srihari Rangaswamy (mridangam), Narasimhamurthy Namamishra (Flute) and Guru Satya Pradeep (nattuvangam).
