PALATINE: The Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago (PCS) in conjunction with Sikh Religious Society organized a Social Security Benefits Informational Seminar at the Sikh Gurudwara in Palatine Illinois on Sunday, October 6.
Doug Nyugen, Deputy Director of Communication Social Security Administration Chicago, came to conduct the seminar that was well attended and was open to all.
Nyugen made a presentation about what social security is and who qualifies to receive it, and when is the best time to start taking it. There are several strategies for married couples based on age, income, life expectancy, spousal survivor benefits for when to claim the benefits. Help is available to make the decisions. It generated a very lively questions and answer session among people close to retirement age and also younger.
Social Security Online is a tool available on the SSA website, and everyone should go on line and open their account.
“You will no longer receive a letter from SSA every year near your birthday like in the past, “Nyugen said. He also talked about the Social Security budget and funding mechanism, the Affordable Care Act also known as the Obama care, Medicare parts A,B,C, and D. He clarified the difference between the Federal Social Security Benefits, S.S.I programs, and the State run Welfare programs like Medicaid and General Assistance Food Stamps programs.
Many immigrant senior citizens had trouble with English language, but the questions and answers were translated from Punjabi to English. The guests took a brief tour of the Gurudwara facilities and partook in the langar.
PCS is a not-for-profit volunteer community service organization devoted to promoting Punjabi culture, language, performing arts, education, good citizenship, healthy life style, and sports in the Metropolitan Chicago area and beyond.
