NY retailer marketing Lord Ganesha shoes

ganesh webNEW YORK: Indian Americans across the country are upset that a Brooklyn (New York) headquartered online retailer KR Store is marketing various shoes, sneakers, socks and leggings carrying images of Hindu deity Lord Ganesha and they pitched strongly for their withdrawal calling it highly inappropriate.

A campaign for seeking withdrawal led by Rajan Zed, President of Universal Society of Hinduism and backed by Madhu Patel, founder president of NRI Press Club and Sohan Joshi former head of National Federation of Indian Associations, said that Lord Ganesha was highly revered in Hinduism and was meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines. In Hinduism, he is worshipped as god of wisdom and remover of obstacles and is invoked before the beginning of any major undertaking.

Any inappropriate use like putting around your feet or legs for commercial or other agenda was not okay and it hurts the devotees. They also urged KR Store and its CEO to offer a formal apology.

Hinduism is the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about 1.1 billion adherents and a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken frivolously. Symbols of any faith, large or small, should not be mishandled, they pointed out.

Such trivialization of Hindu deity was disturbing to Hindus the world over, Zed added.

KR Store, which sells pillows, t-shirts, bags, tank-tops, leggings and shoes; claims to successfully ship “many products worldwide each day” and “have many happy customers in every corner of the globe”.
