Dallas, Texas: A jubilant crowd of over 1000 non-resident Indians (NRIs) and some Americans, including children, from all walks of life gathered to celebrate India’s 73rd Independence Day August 15 at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Plaza in Irving, Texas.
Rao Kalvala, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial of North Texas (MGMNT) secretary, welcomed those attending and introduced the guests. In his opening remarks, Rao thanked the community and city of Irving officials for their support in building the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Plaza. The Indian flag was hoisted amid thunderous applause from the crowd by Dr Prasad Thotakura and the MGMNT team
Irving City Mayor Pro Tem Oscar Ward attended the event as the chief guest of honour. Gopal Ponangi, Frisco ISD Board of Trustees, Manish Sethi of Coppell ISD Board of Trustees, Vatsa Ramanathan of the Allen ISD Board of Trustees, Raj Menon of the Collin Community College District Board of Trustees, and Ty Bledsoe, AT&T AVP (External & Legislative Affairs), graced the event as special guests. Local musical teacher Swathi presented patriotic songs with her students.
Thotakura, in his address, said that the history of India’s Independence is laced with many struggles and sacrifices.
“We are all gathered here at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Plaza, the largest Gandhi memorial in the USA to pay our rich tribute to all freedom fighters and many national leaders, especially Mahatma Gandhi, who initiated methods like non-violent resistance, civil disobedience, Dandi March, Salt Sathyagraha that resulted in freedom for India from British rule,” he said.
John Hammond, MGMNT co-chair thanked the chief guest, all special guests, TV5 Media, TV9 Media, and TV Asia for their media coverage, Bombay studio for photography, DJ Manesh for audio and video arrangements, Radio Caravan for promoting the event and scores of volunteers. The MGMNT Board distributed Indian and American flags and refreshments at the event.
