CHICAGO: Hindu Mandir of Lake County celebrated Guru Purnima on July 21. It became more special when the Executive Committee of the Temple honored almost hundred Varishta Vyaktis (elder citizens) of Illinois.
The function started with regular Ganesh Abhishekam performed by Pandit Ganeshji followed by Guru Poojan of Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya, Madhavacharya, Maha Prabhu Vallabhacharya and Jagadguru Lord Krishna with the Vedic Mantra chanting.
This day is celebrated as Vyasa Punima also. As a mark of respect to Maharishi Veda Vyasa, the temple priest offered turbans to two senior Brahmins after cleaning their feet. The priest also presented them Tilak, Prasad and Aarti for the Vyasa Pooja with Vedic mantras. Bhajans were sung by Rita Patel, Atul Soni and Vasu Choksi.
President Irshad Khan of Islamic Foundation North along with other dignitaries attended the whole ceremony with open hearts. This is an example of interfaith fellowship. Vaseem from the IFN sang a devotional bhajan. President Harsh Kumar honored them with Sanman Patra and Uttariya. This spreads the color of friendship between religions.
According to Pandit Anil Joshiji, Varishta Vyaktis are living gurus of our family. They play important roles in building well-balanced families and society. Our Indian Identity is standing out in the world because of their guidance and directions to lead a spiritual life. In this connection youngsters honored almost 100 seniors by washing their feet, and presented them with Tilak, Uttariya, Sanman Patra, Prasad and Aarti.
The Temple president honored Smt Vandana Jhingan of TV Asia for her dedicated, sincere and honest services to the Indian community. The program ended with vote of thanks by Dr Harsh Kumar. He thanked all the attendees and volunteers for their support to make this function a grand success. More than three hundred people attended the function. The Langar Prasad was arranged in a beautifully decorated dining hall of the temple by temple volunteers.
