ST LOUIS: Srinivasa Ramanujan Mathematricks Club hosted Medhavadhanam on Saturday, August 12 at Hindu temple of St. Louis with a sizable participation from members and kids
Kantharao Minnaganti introduced Srinivasa Ramanujan Mathematricks Club to the audience and explained the benefits mentioning his daughter who participated in the summer program a few years ago. Sruthi Manasa gave the historic background of Srinivasa Ramanujan Mathematricks Club, Sanghamitra’s and Sreenivasa Rao Ainapurapu’s activities and involvement in the community.

Sreenivasa Rao during his talk explained the ancient Vedic computations, how the saints used to compute the times of eclipses, solstices and other astronomical phenomenon. He also mentioned how the scriptures gave information about various planets, their colors and the significance of each one of them, information about galaxies, the milky way, comets, black holes and others.

He then explained how to guide a 3rd or 4th grader through basics of Algebra, Geometry etc. in a playful way with visuals like fruits, toys etc. Then moved on to explain about Vedic Math, remembered and offered obeisance to Sri Bharathi Krishna Teerth, Sankaracharya from Puri matt, whose effort and great work brought the wisdom from the Atharvaveda to the mankind.

Atharvaveda deals with the fields of science and technology, metallurgy, aeronautics, constructions to name a few.

Sreenivasa Ainapurapu then introduced 13 topics with the participants answering each topic. Finding triples, square roots, cube roots, fifth roots, filling a 5 X 5 matrix in such a way that the sum of digits in each row, each column and each diagonal equal to the given number, multiplication by 25 from left to right, writing decimal recurring places for a fraction like 1/29, 1/39, 1/49, 1/89 etc., framing a 12 digit number that is divisible by 13, computing the day for a given date, month and year are some of the topics.

Audience asked questions on each topic and they felt amazed seeing how fast the kids answered those questions. The response to recurring decimal places for 1/49 (42 digits), 1/59 (58 decimal places) kept them spell bound.

All the kids did an awesome job. Some of the kids went an extra mile and answered very tough questions from the audience.

Concluding the program Sruthi Manasa expressed her gratitude on behalf of Sanghamitra and Srinivasa Ramanujan Mathematricks Club to the Hindu temple of St. Louis for allowing the team to use the facility for organizing Medhavadhanam and also for conducting classes during the summer months, the Telugu association of St. Louis (TAS), the parents for encouraging and providing their support for their kids to participate in summer program.
