CHINO HILLS, CA: Renowned landmarks in cities around the world switched off all lights for 60 minutes on Saturday to honor their commitment to protecting the planet. Joining these municipalities, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Chino Hills, California observed its third annual Earth Hour at 8:30 pm on Saturday, March 28.
Earth Hour is organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature. It started in Sydney, Australia as a single city event in 2007. Over the years, it has grown to become one of the world’s largest voluntary actions for the environment.
BAPS volunteers worked together to arrange candles along the outer staircase and across the inner sanctum of the Mandir. The evening rituals were performed by candlelight. “The candlelit Mandir reminded me that anyone can contribute to the global effort in protecting our earth,” said volunteer Krupa Shah, “and it is our responsibility to join together to do our part in sustaining the environment.”
BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha has pledged to join millions of individuals, businesses and governments around the world in turning off their lights for Earth Hour. Demonstrating a year-round commitment to the principles of environmental sustainability symbolized by Earth Hour, BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha is continuously finding innovative ways to creatively harness cutting edge environmental designs and materials in its Mandirs and activities. Currently, many BAPS facilities utilize solar power, LED lighting, power saving fiber optics and management practices to ensure energy consumption is both optimal and efficient.
Earth Hour was also observed at BAPS Mandirs across North America and at Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Delhi.
