FREMONT, CA: Swami Vivekananda is perhaps the most revered and well known emissary of Hindu religion who brought the teachings to west. His lecture series a century ago are still well known and remembered widely.
In 1900, Swami Vivekananda was invited by Rev. Benjamin Fay Mills to First Unitarian Church of Oakland. Swami ji delivered a series of lectures on ‘The Claims of Vedanta on the Modern World’ and ‘Vedanta and Christianity’. For four months Swami Vivekananda lectured and taught classes in San Francisco, Oakland and Alameda, traveling back and forth across the Bay, sowing the seeds of the exalted, universal ideas of Vedanta. His lectures were an instant hit and many people had to be refused access to the church at that time as there was no room to accommodate everyone.
Festival of India and Parade this year has adopted Swamiji’s 150th Birth Anniversary celebration as a key theme this year. There are many activities planned to commemorate the event. A special exhibition and float are being built as part of the festival. Many Bay area children are preparing for special rendition of Swami Vivekananda’s teachings. The events are planned for both the days of Festival on August 17th and 18th.
