ST LOUIS: The South Asian Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis recently held its official kick-off event at the Saint Louis University School of Law. There was an impressive roster of government, business and civic leaders in attendance. The group was co-founded by Commissioner Sreenivasa Rao (Sreenu) Dandamudi, who is also serving as its inaugural President.
Currently seeking new members, every licensed attorney, retired attorney, and law student in the metropolitan St. Louis region (both sides of the Mississippi river) is eligible for membership in the South Asian Bar Association.
“During our first year we will focus on building the association from the ground up,” says Dandamudi. “Once we’re established, our goal is to provide a legal network of opportunities for attorneys as well as assistance to those in need.”
Commissioner Dandamudi notes that founding the group was a team effort. “There is a core group of over a dozen attorneys that worked to form the association,” he explains. His personal experience growing up in St. Louis was also a motivating factor. “We created this organization to complement other efforts, such as the Mosaic Project, to continue to bolster the St. Louis region.”
SABA kick-off event at the Saint Louis University School of Law had an impressive list of legal, business and community leaders attended, including former Missouri Supreme Court Judge and Saint Louis University Law School Dean Mike Wolff, Missouri Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary R. Russell, Missouri Supreme Court Judges Laura Denvir Stith, Zel Fischer and George W. Draper, III; Missouri House Speaker Timothy W. Jones, Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander, Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster, St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley and State Representative Jill Schupp among many others.
At the group’s launch, Judge George W. Draper, III, of the Missouri Supreme Court, congratulated the founders. “The first official event of the South Asian Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis clearly demonstrated the commitment of the founders and future leaders,” he says.
“Commissioner Sreenu Dandamudi and the other members of the organization have opened the eyes of the Missouri legal community to the presence and sophistication of the South Asian legal community. I join with the many state officials that echoed congratulations and welcome this organization wholeheartedly.”
