SAN JOSE, CA: “I knew that WomenNow TV would be the best organizers for the first ever India Day event to be held at Santana Row,” exclaimed Ash Kalra, “But even in my wildest imagination, I could not imagine how hugely successful it was.”
Kalra, San Jose City Council member, championed this event to bring India’s cultural diversity to a mainstream population in this trend-setting free event. Santana Row, always a hub of activity on the weekends, was completely jam-packed as over an estimated 7,000 people braved the hot day to watch the non-stop entertainment on the open stage.
Democratic candidate for San Jose Mayoral election Dave Costese commented, “I have never seen Santana Row look so beautiful.”
Cortese was referring to a beautiful mandap with henna artists, tents, village scene with colorful carts and brightly embroidered cushions and throws around the stage. The nonstop entertainment included dance performances by leading Indian dance groups such as Dance Identity, Chhandam, Tarana, Targini, Kriti, S3, San Jose State University Bhangra, Ushanjali and Bombay Jam.
Every performance was exceptional. Youngsters from Chhandam got a standing ovation for their mesmerizing performance and Dance Identity had an entire audience rocking as they taught them the latest Bollywood moves.
Priya Gandhi and Raunak entertained the audience with their foot-tapping music and Dr Clifton presented yoga. Top fashion designer houses Vama, Celebrations, Chona Pike, Ateka Sultan and C-Bazar presented the trendiest fashions and bridal wear. Amber Restaurant served special Indian cuisine.
The Ms. WomenNow pageant had its first two rounds in the center stage, followed by the final events and crowning at a sold-out ticketed event at Hotel Valencia. Payal Tailor was crowned Ms. WomenNow. Zee TV, cosponsor of the event, and other sponsors Yupptv, Travelopod, Bears for Humanity, UST Global and Ultimate Lounge Building Kids all selected spokespersons and brand models from the bevy of beauties.
Ro Khanna, Democratic Candidate, 2014, was among the many dignitaries that came out to support the event.
“This was only possible because of the shared vision of our team of dedicated volunteers,” said Ena Sarkar, CEO of WomenNowTV. “Everyone worked together to make this a completely flawless event. For such a huge undertaking, there was not even one minute delay in the production of events. In fact,” she laughs, “at one point there was a quick panic because we were actually running three minutes ahead of schedule!”
WomenNow TV, created in 2010 is the first South Asian TV Talk Show located in the Bay Area that reaches out to Indian and South Asian communities around the world.
