NEW YORK: Pratham, one of the largest non-governmental organizations working to provide quality education to the underprivileged children of India, has been awarded prestigious BBVA Foundation “Frontiers of Knowledge Award” in the Development Cooperation category.
This is a global recognition of its innovative approach to learning as it helps involving more individuals in the learning process and will expand Pratham’s influence around the world.
The BBVA Foundation disseminates world-class scientific research with the belief that science and knowledge hold the key to an improved future.
BBVA jury underscored Pratham’s ability to address children’s learning needs both in and out of school. The Pratham model has delivered quality education to tens of millions of disadvantaged children by coordinating voluntary and government efforts and evaluating the results.
Over the years, Pratham has been rallying around the idea that in India reading should be taught as a distinct skill. Its innovative approach to teaching, which combines the understanding of its own language and its own script with Western knowhow, will effectively lead to significant improvement in literacy.
Pratham was established in 1994 to provide education to children in the slums of Mumbai city. Since then, the organization has grown both in scope and geographical coverage.
It reaches out to millions of children living both in rural and urban areas through a range of interventions. The Pratham team comprises educationists, development professionals, media personnel, corporate help, workers, activists, PhDs, MBAs, CAs, civil servants, bankers, corporate professionals, consultants, who all bring their experiences and perspectives to the organization and are unified by the common vision of improving the future of children.
The BBVA seek to recognize and encourage world-class research and artistic creation, prizing contributions of lasting impact for their originality, theoretical significance and ability to push back the frontiers of the known world.
These international awards span eight categories: Basic Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics), Biomedicine, Ecology and Conservation Biology, Information and Communication Technologies, Economics, Finance and Management, Contemporary Music, Climate Change and Development Cooperation.
The Award citation said that Pratham for over twenty years has catered successfully to the learning needs of tens of millions of disadvantaged children. In doing so, it has designed and implemented new methods that accelerate reading, it added.
