SANTA CLARA, CA: Ro Khanna, candidate for Congress and former Obama administration official, joined community leaders Eugene Zhang, CEO of InnoSpring, and Don Sun, Chair of the Cupertino Planning Commission on July 28 for an in-depth exploration into relations between the U.S., China, and India and what it means locally for the 17th district.

The China-India-US: Silicon Valley Roundtable took place at Innospring, Inc., 2901 Tasman Dr.

In a globalized 21st century economy, it is increasingly important for countries with dynamic economies to unite together to promote strong economic partnerships, allowing well-balanced domestic manufacturing to grow, and facilitating innovation and the development of new technologies.

The panelists discussed how an expanded partnership will impact Silicon Valley’s high technology and skilled manufacturing sectors over the next 20 years, and reflected upon the opportunities, challenges, and possibilities for economic growth that will be opened when these countries work together.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to come together with two economic experts in our local community to discuss this important and pressing international relationship,” said Khanna. “The vibrant Indian and Chinese communities here in the 17th district have made incredible contributions to our economy by creating jobs, fostering innovation and taking risks to start new companies.

“Not only do I believe the strengthening of our economic partnership with India and China is possible, I know that it is imperative for America to have a prosperous and peaceful 21st century. I am thankful for the support of Eugene Zhang and Don Sun as I run for Congress to bring a new type of forward looking vision for Silicon Valley.”

A Bay Area resident for more than a decade, Ro returned home to Silicon Valley after spending two years in the Obama Administration, where he took a practical, hands-on approach to public service.

As Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Commerce, Ro regularly traveled around the country meeting with American manufacturers of all sizes to better understand their needs and the best ways for government to promote and support them.

In this role, Ro managed 108 domestic Commerce offices dedicated to helping companies in the United States innovate and increase their exports to consumers around the world. Ro’s book on manufacturing, Entrepreneurial Nation: Why Manufacturing is Still Key to America’s Future, has won widespread praise for its strategies for keeping the best companies, jobs, and opportunities in America.

“As CEO of InnoSpring, I recognize the vital importance of encouraging cross-cultural innovation between China, India, and the US – three of the world’s fastest developing technology industries,” said Zhang. “InnoSpring, home to startups from all three nations, is a technology startup incubator that is committed to helping startups expand internationally and take advantage of global market opportunities.

“I have seen our partnerships stimulate innovation, and I believe that the U.S. should jump on the opportunity to increase market opportunities on a grand scale. I enjoyed the opportunity to discuss these issues with Ro, someone who truly understands the innovation economy and the role that foreign partnerships play in the success of the Valley.”

“Silicon Valley is such a unique area because we are a hub for innovation, and we also have a great potential for high tech manufacturing,” said Don Sun. “As the Chair of the Cupertino Planning Commission, I firmly believe that the government could do better by the middle class if it worked to strengthen the economic partnership with China and India. That would create good paying jobs by expanding our capacity for domestic manufacturing. Ro and Eugene are leaders on this issue who have pragmatic proposals for expanding markets, and I am encouraged that we are engaging the community in this important discussion.”
