In the past two years our worlds have changed drastically. The paradigm has shifted. Humanity has had to adjust to so many changes over this short span of time. How people cope with these changes differs from person to person, society to society.
In such volatile times, we have also seen an increase in hate crimes and hate incidents against minorities. One such community to be affected is the South Asian society, which has been experiencing an uptick in hate crimes against them.
Hate crimes are an extreme form of prejudice, made more likely in the context of social and political change. Many a times a hate crime can be triggered by fear, ignorance, and anger, which can lead to targeted aggression.
Saahas for Cause a non-profit organization based in Southern California that actively works with the South Asian population in Orange and LA county has started grassroot level work on addressing this issue of hate crimes against South Asians.
As an organization that works in the community to address issues of public health and public safety, Saahas has been actively working to increase knowledge about the South Asian community for harmony in the society.
One step in that direction was their public yoga event conducted on September 25th at the Cerritos Park East, by LathaVasan, a very knowledgeable yoga instructor. Yoga, an ancient practice that was born in India, in South Asia, is now a universal language.
Yoga is known to be an excellent tool for mind, body and spiritual wellness. It also sends the message of peace and harmony. The yoga event aimed to provide an opportunity for people from all walks of life to experience the South Asian culture and to work on their mind and body.
The event was attended by 70 people. Saahas for Cause distributed yoga mats, stress balls, bags, PPEs, etc. to community. For more information on reporting hate crimes or upcoming yoga sessions at Saahas, please emai info@saahasforcause.org
