CHICAGO: Bandi Chhorh Diwas of Dhan GuruHargobind Sahib was celebrated with great fervor at Devon Gurudwara Sahib in Chicago October 27 Akhand Paath of the Guru Granth. The event was held with the cooperation, contribution and assistance from the entire holy congregation. Sadhsangat performed the Sewa of cutting vegetables, preparing the community lunch and serving it on all three days.

Teerath Singh, Trilok Singh and Bachan Singh rendered excellent service on all three days connecting the Sadh Sangat to the principles laid down by Guru Sahib. They sang gurbani kirtan after the Akhand Paath and in the evening after Rehraas Sahi.

Bandi Chhorh Diwas is a day on which the sixth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Hargobind Sahib, was released from the Gwalior prison along with 52 Kings. The word “Bandi” means “imprisoned”, “Chhorh” means “release” and “Diwas” means “day” and together Bandi Chhor Diwas means Prisoner Release Day.

These 52 Kings were “political prisoners” and had been held without trial. Guru Hargobind could have left the prison when he was offered a chance but he thought of others before himself. For him, others’ freedom and rights were more important than his own.

The Devon Gurdwara also celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights, symbolizing the victory of good over evil with the hall packed with guests, invitees and devotees on October 27.
