CHICAGO: Hundreds of community members and organizations attended an interactive session on studies of Hindi language and Hindi literature organized by the Indian Consulate in Chicago at its downtown premise on December 7.

Judging from the response, various presentations, speeches from activists and encouraging participation by the youth, it would not be an exaggeration to say that the event was a grand success.

This meet at the Consulate as part of the Hindi Divas celebrations. The Consulate team led by Consul General Sudhaker Dalela, Consul Ranjit Singh and others made extra efforts to invite a good number of individual activists and institutions associated with Hindi studies in Chicagoland and adjoining areas to the Consulate premises to ensure a wide and broad-based  participation

The objective of the interactive session was to get an insight into the vision and activities of the individuals and organizations involved in the spread of  Hindi language and literature besides creating awareness about the need to spread the Indian national language among communities at large and particularly, the second generation Indian origin youth here. The aim was also to see that information is available on Hindi studies to interested members of the Indian American community and friends of India.

Institutions such as Bal Vihar, Chicago, Hindi Gurukul, Aurora, and Hindu Satsang, Chicago, gave presentations on their Hindi teaching programs. A few students of these organizations shared their experiences of Hindi learning. Hindi theatre groups such as Mandi Theater and Dramatech of America gave brief presentations on their activities and Hindi productions. Hindi Club of Illinois also was there and its founding president Gurbachan Kaur touched upon efforts in the past 10 years to popularize the Indian national language in Chicagoland by hosting classes on a regular basis and setting up of a Hindi library.

Active participation by members of the audience was encouraged by organizing of a quiz session. The concluding presentation was given by Prof. Mithilesh Mishra, Director, Hindi-Urdu and South Asian Languages, Department of Linguistics and Global Studies, the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Another plus point was the emceeing done by Ranjit Singh in chaste Hindi. Also, almost all of the speakers addressed the gathering in Hindi.

In his remarks, Consul General Dalela appreciated the efforts of the institutions, theater groups, and individuals in supporting Hindi studies in a variety of ways, and assured them of the Consulate’s support for study and spread of Hindi and other Indian languages in the US Mid-West.
