ST LOUIS: Bal Vihar of St. Louis, a modern version of yesteryears’ of Gurukul, celebrated its Annual Day last month. This event wrapped up 22 successful years of Bal Vihar’s existence.

The Annual Day was also a special occasion for 11 senior youths who completed their Bal Vihar journey. These students served as teachers during their last year guiding their younger community. These students are now ready for the next level of journey that leads them towards leveraging the skills they acquired during these last few years.

This day was preceded by Graduation Day for two groups of students on May 4. Two dozen students graduated from regular Bal Vihar into Youth Group. These students are ready to move to the next level where they will be engaged in a lot of community and inter-faith activities. Youths also assist the teachers and younger students in regular classrooms.

May 4 was also an opportunity for each class to showcase special Bhajans and Yoga postures they have learned this school year. It was amazing to see with what ease the children have been able to pick up new bhajans and some challenging postures as they progressed through the years.

The Center for Indian Cultural Education – Bal Vihar of St. Louis, a non-profit organization, since its inception in 1992 has been serving the Metro St. Louis Indian community. The primary focus of this organization is to provide Indian cultural education to students age 5-18, its application and integration with the global multicultural and multifaceted society.

Over last 20+ years Bal Vihar has helped groom a breed of multi-cultural global leaders of next generation that have been shaped by the best of the cultures from east and west. These youngsters understand the need and value of the cultural values that have been instilled in them through the rigorous program.

Students are also taught discipline, tolerance and devotion in their daily routine. The ultimate goal is “to throw the light of cultural knowledge on every child, to make every child an outstanding citizen and to spread the song of peace and harmony around the world.”
